Longford Cycling And Racing Club welcomes new members at any time of the year with any level of fitness. For anyone with an interest in leisure cycling and with the Sportif season not far away, this is an ideal time of the year to kick start cycling as a new hobby or even for anyone who cycled previously and is looking to get back into cycling after a long winter break, then this maybe an ideal opportunity for you.
From Sunday February 18th, Longford Cycling And Racing Club will commence a 6 week programme which welcomes
beginner cyclists or even the more seasoned cyclists to come along and try out cycling with a group. As part of the
programme Longford Cycling And Racing Club will ensure a captain(s) is available to bring out new beginners in a seperate
group than the existing seasoned club members for a short distance with the distance increasing slightly each week (See below for structured plan).
By the end of the programme, the expectation is that anyone who fully completes the programme will be able to comfortably cycle 60km and be in a suitable position to participate in any of the many local sportives that take place in Longford and neighbouring counties (Some of which are outlined below).
It is hoped that the participants will continue to cycle with existing club members and increase on both distance and speed via club spins. Overall the programme will see participants improve on their health & fitness in general and also improve their endurance to cycle longer distances over a few months with the ability to competently complete a 100KM+ sportif.
Each member of the programme can avail of 3 free cycles to see if group cycling is something that is for them.
After the third week of the programme (March 4th), each member will be required to take out Club Membership via Cycling Ireland. This ensures that each member is officially insured while out cycling on a club spin.
The meeting point will be Halfords Car Park at the N4 Axis Center at approx 9:45AM ready to leave for 10AM sharp.
Particpiants will require the following items with them on the day, Helmet, suitable clothing for the weather on the day (Hi Vis top, rain jacket, gloves etc), at least one bottle of water, some food (banana, few biscuits in a back pocket etc), a few euros (sometimes a coffee stop is taken depending on the route), mobile phone (in case of emergency). Also road bikes should be in a road worthy condition, fully functioning gears, brakes and correctly inflated tyres.
